DESCRIPTION:Cymande / Asha Puthli / Zacchae’us Paul / K.Tea \n\n\n\nDoors Open: 5:00 PMCentral ParkAll AgesFree \n\n\n\nCymande has drawn membership from several Caribbean nations. The band’s work is a culmination of funk\, soul\, reggae\, rock\, calypso\, and jazz with African rhythms into a sound they dubbed “nyah-rock. After releasing three albums between 1971-1974\, they disappeared until reforming to tour in the 2010s. \n\n\n\nAsha Puthli returns to SummerStage after a 19 year hiatus. Known for her award-winning vocals on Ornette Coleman’s Science Fiction album\, she has continued to cement herself as Jazz royalty. Among her many accomplishments\, she is noted as being a disco pioneer\, releaser of twelve studio albums\, and has been placed by Andy Warhol in his time capsule. \n\n\n\nZacchae’us Paul is a multi-instrumentalist\, composer\, and producer who’s an artist with a fresh and irreverent take on Black music and the African diaspora\, stretching and bending jazz around Atlanta hip-hop\, gospel sounds and philosophies\, and the Caribbean rhythms he picked up studying in Puerto Rico. \n\n\n\nSpinning tunes for the night is NYC-based DJ K.Tea\, who crafts sonic journeys that inspire freedom\, dance\, and discovery within house music. \n\n\n\nThis show is presented in association with Giantstep\, the respected music and events agency beloved for their iconic ‘90s-era party “dedicated to the preservation of funk.”
